River Terrace Cafe, Somerset House, London – 1998-2000

The River Terrace Café provides 100 seats on a raised timber deck, 4.5 by 27 metres, with spectacular views along the Thames.  It is designed to impose minimally on the large dimensions of Somerset House terrace, whilst also being easily dismantled for winter.  Six inverted umbrellas positioned in series on the platform, and glass panelling, provide shelter and acoustic insulation without obstructing the views over the river.
